First Development Along the New Jersey Coastline

Early Settlements

New Jersey history began at least 10,000 years ago when indigenous people first arrived in the region. The colonial history of New Jersey was much more recent when in 1609 Henry Hudson sailed through Newark Bay. New Jersey got its first governor in 1738 under Lewis Morris. The New Jersey coastline was essential during the Revolutionary War. During the Revolutionary War, privateers aided the revolution effort by ambushing the British Navy. Today the New Jersey coastline continues to be a lively and dynamic region.
